Calle Delivers Game-Winner In OT

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team had opportunities to take the lead in regulation, but it was a Ron Calle score in overtime that gave the Hurricanes their first victory of the season, a 1-0 decision over Brewton-Parker College, on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

GSW improved its record to 1-2, while the Barons fell to 0-4-1.

Southwestern forward Isaac Avila had a shot against Brewton-Parker goalkeeper Bryan Albarez in a one-on-one situation go wide in the 22nd minute and minutes later Calle saw a shot in the crossbar.

But perhaps the best opportunity for a GSW score in regulation came in the 59th minute when the Hurricanes were awarded a penalty kick, but the attempt sailed left.

Calle beat the Brewton-Parker defenders to a lead pass from Jon-Luke Cannada in the 97th minute and punched the shot over Albarez for the game-winner.

GSW finished with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal and committed nine fewer fouls than BPC, 19-10.

The Barons took four more corner kicks, 7-3.

GSW goalkeeper Joshua Swift kept Brewton-Parker scoreless for the first 45 minutes with two saves. Garrett Blamire played between the pipes for GSW the rest of the way and saved one. Albarez stopped eight for Brewton-Parker.

Southwestern returns home to open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against UNC Pembroke.
