AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team had to play from behind almost the entire match Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field in a 3-0 loss to Clayton State after surrendering a goal in the seventh minute.

Seku Thornwell flicked a ball over the GSW defense down the middle of the field to nearby teammate Avery Shepard who drilled a shot into the top left corner of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning score at the 6:36 mark.

Bilal Nakhil extended the Clayton State advantage to 2-0 with a goal in the 35th minute and the Lakers held that advantage until Sean Morris scored the final goal of the match with less than 10 minutes remaining.    

The Hurricanes fall to 3-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the Peach Belt Conference after suffering their seventh-straight loss. Clayton State has won four of its last five matches and improves to 7-5-1 overall and 4-3 in PBC play.

GSW finished with five shots on goal compared to 17 by the Lakers. Ron Calle had two shots on goal to lead the Hurricanes. Clayton State held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Joshua Swift saved 14 in goal for GSW, the most by a Hurricane keeper in a match this season. Nick Punter stopped five for Clayton State.

Southwestern closes the 2014 season with a trio of road contests beginning with a 7 p.m. match at Francis Marion on Saturday.
