Avila Makes Program History With First-Team Accolades

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern men's soccer sophomore Isaac Avila was named to the 2014 Peach Belt All-Conference First Team announced over the weekend at the league's annual soccer awards banquet in Augusta, Ga.

Avila appeared in 16 matches this season and started 14 contests for the Hurricanes. The Jessup, Ga., native led the team with five goals and three assists to become the first soccer player in GSW history named All-PBC First Team and the first forward to receive post-season honors.

After scoring the Hurricanes first goal of the season in the opener against Faulkner, Avila would contribute assists at Southeastern and against Thomas before notching his first goal in conference play at Lander. He closed out September with an assist against Florida College.

Avila's next goal came against eventual PBC champion and the current second-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Young Harris on Oct. 18. He scored his final two goals, including the game winner in overtime, in a 3-2 victory at Point University to became the first Hurricane in over two years to record two goals in a match.

Behind Avila's contributions, GSW made marked improvement in its offensive output in 2014 as the squad accounted for the second-most goals scored in a season in program history, two shy of the record.

Avila is the fourth Hurricane to receive post-season accolades in the program's young history and the first since Shane McKay was named all-conference second team as a midfielder in 2011.
