GSW Top 10 Moments Of 2014-15: #9

AMERICUS - Coming in at No. 9 for the 2014-15 Top 10 Moments in Georgia Southwestern sports are the accomplishments of the men's soccer team.

The men's 2014 season had three highlights that stood out to make them No. 9.

The first highlight happened on Sept. 10 in the game against Brewton-Parker. The game went scoreless for all of regulation and was sent into overtime. Ron Calle beat the Brewton-Parker defenders in the 97th minute and punched the shot over the goalie for not only the game-winner but their first win of the season.

The second men's soccer highlight happened in the very next game on Sept. 13 verse UNC Pembroke. The Hurricanes went into the game 0-8 in the series and came out with their first win over UNCP and their first conference win of the season.

The win was the first time GSW has collected back-to-back victories since 2011 and was the first time the program enjoyed a winning record in conference play. GSW senior Cesar Espinosa scored the lone goal of the match in the 14th minute.

The last highlight came at the end of the season when GSW won their second overtime game. Isaac Avila scored the final two GSW goals, including the deciding score in overtime, to lead the Hurricanes to their fourth victory of the season, the most by the program since joining the NCAA in 2006.

Avila is also the first Peach Belt All-Conference First Team in GSW soccer history. Avila appeared in 16 matches this past season and started 14 games. The Jessup, Ga., native led the team with five goals and three assists to capture the first soccer player forward to receive post-season honors.
