AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern goalkeeper Joshua Swift did all he could to keep Faulkner University off the board, setting a school record for most saves in a match with 22, but playing a man down for the final 14 minutes of regulation proved to be too much for the Hurricanes as Faulkner scored in the 83rd minute to force overtime, then ended it 2:25 into the first extra session to hand GSW a 2-1 loss Saturday at Hurricane Field.

GSW drops to 1-2 this fall while Faulkner improved its record to 3-1.

Silvio Polly gave the Hurricanes an early lead when he scored off a corner kick in the 14th minute thanks to an assist from Trevor Dempsey.

Perhaps Swift's best stop of the day came at the 43:49 mark when he turned away a penalty kick by Renan de Sousa after diving to his left-hand side and batting the ball away with one hand. That play kept GSW on top and allowed the Hurricanes to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The turning point of the match came in the 77th minute, with the Hurricanes maintaining their one-goal advantage, when Jonathan Sayers was issued consecutive yellow cards and forced to exit the match.

Playing a man down, GSW held Faulkner scoreless for 6 1/2 minutes until de Sousa nailed the equalizer. In the extra session, it was a give-and-go from de Sousa to Evens Alcide straight down the middle of the box that led to game-winning score for Faulkner. 

The Eagles finished with a 25-4 shots on goal advantage and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Diego da Silva made all three of his saves in the second half for Faulkner.

The Hurricanes return to action on Wednesday and host Middle Georgia State University at 3:30 p.m.
