'Canes Push No. 27 Southern Indiana

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 27 Southern Indiana in a NCAA Division II non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.

The Hurricanes fell to 2-10 overall and USI improved to 6-4.

GSW gave the Screaming Eagles a pair of tough matches in doubles play. Jake Koonce and Steven Blythe lost 9-7 to Jack Joyce and Joel Stern at No. 1 and Oliver Marshall and Abel Acuna-Moreno lost 8-6 at No. 2 against Samuel Kiladejo and Aaron Barris.

Several of the matchups on the singles side were tight as well. Blythe won the opening set at No. 3, 6-0, before Anthony Van Rompay rallied back to take the next two, 6-2, 6-1. Koonce forced a tiebreaker in the first set against Joyce and was the last match to be completed on Wednesday due to extended points, but eventually lost 7-6, 6-2. Justin Ralston lost a tiebreaker in the second set of his match at No. 4 after dropping the opening set to Barris, 6-4.

Southwestern is back in action on Saturday with a noon match at Fort Valley State.
