Koonce & Blythe Pull Off Doubles Upset

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams dropped a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against nationally-ranked Georgia College on Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Center. The men lost 8-1 to the No. 20 Bobcats and the women suffered a 9-0 loss against the 15th-ranked GC program.

Jake Koonce and Steven Blythe pulled off the upset of the day when they knocked off the 23rd-ranked doubles team of Yannick Hass and Vincent Castermans, 8-6, for the Hurricanes lone team point of the afternoon.

Koonce shook off a 6-0 opening set at No. 1 singles to push Castermans to 6-4 in the second. Abel Acuna-Moreno lost by an identical score at No. 4 singles against Taylor Powell. Blythe suffered a 6-3, 6-2, setback to Anton Waern at No. 3.  

The Hurricanes take a 4-15 record to No. 10 Valdosta State on Tuesday. Georgia College improved to 10-7, 6-2 in the PBC.

Southwestern could manage only one game against GC in doubles action.

Ashley Denby took three games in the opening set at No. 5 singles against Emma Niemi before losing the second set 6-1.

GSW dropped to 5-17 this spring, 0-12 in the PBC. Georgia College won its seventh straight match and improved to 15-4 overall, 10-1 in conference play.

The Lady Hurricanes wrap up their 2014-15 season on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against North Georgia.
