Lady 'Canes take game two, split doubleheader with UNC Pembroke

Georgia Southwestern split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with UNC Pembroke on Tuesday afternoon in Americus; the Lady Canes lost the first game 10-6 and won the nightcap 5-2.

In game one, UNCP jumped on GSW early as the first five batters reached base en route to a four-run first inning.

The score remained 4-0 until the fifth inning when Heather Chambers broke up Pembroke's no-hitter and shutout with a solo home run to left center field.

After the Lady Braves scored a run in the sixth, Shea Weaver's two-out RBI double followed by Katie Wooten's RBI single brought the Lady 'Canes within two runs at 5-3.

However, a five hit, five run top of the seventh proved to be too much to overcome.  GSW scored three in the seventh and loaded the bases before UNCP starting pitcher Whitney Landwermeyer re-entered the game to strike out the final two Southwestern batters for the win.

Tiffany Milstid (0-4) was unable to get out of the first inning and took the loss for the Lady 'Canes.  Landwermeyer (4-6) pitched a total of 6.2 innings for the win.

Weaver had two RBI for GSW.  Anna Dankewich scored two runs.

In the nightcap, Southwestern (6-14, 1-3 PBC) punched two runs across in a three-hit first inning, highlighted by Nichole Griffin's RBI double, to stake an early lead.

The Lady 'Canes pushed two more runs across in the third inning as Heather Denny's RBI single was the lone hit of the frame.

GSW scored their final run an inning later when Weaver led off with a triple and scored during the 'Canes next at bat on a wild pitch.

Pembroke (7-13, 2-2 PBC) got on the board in the seventh with two late runs, but the Lady 'Canes came away with the doubleheader split.

Brittany Milstid (2-1) picked up the win for GSW, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.  Candace Evans (2-5) took the loss for Pembroke.

Gabby Buck and Griffin had multi-hit games for the Lady Hurricanes.  Buck finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Griffin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

GSW travels to West Georgia on Friday to take part in the two-day Wolves' Invitational.
