Martin tosses no-hitter for GSW, Lady 'Canes split at Anderson

Freshman southpaw Jessica Martin silenced the Anderson University bats by throwing a no-hitter in game two of the Lady 'Canes doubleheader in Anderson, S.C. on Monday afternoon.  Anderson won the first game, 7-4.  GSW took the second game, 1-0.

Martin (2-5) struck out five and walked four in the win.

"Jessica was more dominant than that," said coach Eddie Ward. "Most of her outs were pop-ups in the infield or ground-outs. But who cares when you no hit somebody."

The game's only run came in the fourth inning when Heather Chambers scored on a Brandi Pratt slow-roller on a fielder's choice.

GSW (7-20) managed three hits in the game.

In the first game, Anderson (14-13) scored all seven of its runs in the third and fourth innings. Down 7-4, GSW couldn't score with the bases loaded in the sixth and runners on second and third in the seventh.

"We're constantly getting ourselves behind the eight ball by not scoring until late," said Ward. "We didn't come in and score until the fifth, and then we were still waiting for timely hitting. Our offensive woes continued, and I guess it was about time our pitching failed a little bit because it's been really good. It was one of those days where we weren't good until the second ball game."

Gabby Buck led the Lady Hurricanes going 3-for-4, and Shea Weaver and Katie Wooten each had two hits in the game.

Anna Dankewich's RBI-double pulled GSW within 4-1 in the fourth. Wooten had a two-run single in the fifth that was followed by a Brooke McLemore RBI-single finished the scoring for the Lady Hurricanes.

Brittany Milstid (2-4) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Tiffany Milstid finished the game striking out five and allowing three runs on four hits.

GSW will travel to Milledgeville on Thursday to play Georgia College.
