Georgia College scores in final at bat, completes sweep of Lady 'Canes

Georgia Southwestern dropped a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Georgia College and State University on Thursday afternoon in Milledgeville. The Lady 'Canes lost the first game 8-0 and couldn't hold off GCSU in the nightcap, falling 3-2.

In game one, GCSU scored a run in the first and another in the third before opening things up in the fourth with a four run frame to extend their advantage to 6-0.

The Lady Bobcats scored two more runs in the sixth before the game was called.

GCSU starter Mandy Chandler was nearly perfect in the opener, holding the Lady 'Canes to a single hit while striking out seven and not walking a batter.

Jessica Martin (2-6) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in four innings of work. She struck out four and walked four.

Georgia College's Sherquita Bostick went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBI.

In the nightcap, Georgia College scored a run in the second inning before Southwestern (7-22, 1-5 PBC) answered with a pair of runs in the third, highlighted by Gabby Buck's two-run double, to stake their first lead of the afternoon, 2-1.

The Lady 'Canes would hold that advantage until the sixth inning, when a Georgia College (17-11, 5-1) sacrifice fly tied the ballgame.

GSW put two runners on in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score.  That set the stage for the Lady Bobcats.  After Kati Pickowitz walked and Allison Schwimer was hit by a pitch to start the inning, the runners were advanced on a sacrifice bunt and Pickowitz scored the winning run off of a Lindsey Swanson walk-off single.

Chandler (15-6) pitched four innings of scoreless relief to earn her second win of the day. She struck out seven and did not surrender a walk.

Brittany Milstid (2-5) took the loss for GSW, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out one in the complete game effort.

Buck and Nichole Griffin had multi-hit games for the Lady Hurricanes.  Buck, who has hit safely in five consecutive games, finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles.  Griffin went 2-for-3 with a double.

GSW hosts Augusta State in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
