Lady 'Canes split DH at Columbus State

The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a Wednesday evening doubleheader with Columbus State at Lady Cougar Field. GSW took the first game, 5-1, before dropping the nightcap, 10-1.

The victory in the opener was Southwestern's first over CSU since joining the NCAA (0-6 prior).

Gabby Buck finished the day 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Lady Hurricanes at the plate.   

GAME 1 (non-conference): GSW 5, COLUMBUS STATE 1 

A Lyndi Duff (pictured) three-run home run in the first inning sparked the Lady ‘Canes to victory.

Buck added a solo shot in the fifth and Ashley Harris brought in Katie Wooten on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to complete Southwestern’s scoring.   

CSU scored its lone run in the seventh when Melanie Trevathan crossed home before the tag was put on Lauren Reader, who was gunned down at third base to end the game.  

Tiffany Milstid (4-0) picked up the complete-game win, scattering six hits while walking one and striking out two. The Columbus State run was unearned.

Kristi Bullard (5-8) suffered the loss for CSU allowing five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings of work.

GAME 2 (non-conference): COLUMBUS STATE 10, GSW 1 

A seven-run fifth inning by Columbus State (14-19-1) closed out game 2.

The Lady Hurricanes took the lead early in the nightcap when they scored their lone run of the game in the first on an RBI single by Buck.

Columbus State answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs and proceeded to add a run in the third before ending things in the fifth.

CSU starter Britni McCall (6-6) went the distance, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out two.

Katie Mueller (1-2) allowed 10 runs (six earned) for GSW in 4.1 innings of work, with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Lady Hurricanes (14-25) travel to Dahlonega on Friday to face the top-ranked team in the country, North Georgia, at 3 p.m.
