The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Lander at Doug Spears Field in Greenwood, S.C. GSW lost the first game, 1-0, before bouncing back to win the nightcap, 3-1.

Katie Wooten’s three-run home run in the fourth inning was the difference in the Game 2 victory.

Both GSW starters, Mariko Nomura (Game 1) and Jessica Martin (Game 2), tossed complete games.   

GAME 1: LANDER 1, GSW 0 

Lander scored the game’s lone run in the fifth when Rachelle Adkins singled to centerfield and pinch runner Natalie Batson later scored on Brittney Sheriff’s sacrifice fly.

Mariko Nomura (5-16) suffered the loss for GSW, striking out six, walking two and allowing one earned run on five hits in six innings of work.

Lander’s Hayley Leissner and Shelbey Spencer combined for the two-hit shutout. Leissner (10-3) earned the win as she struck out five, walked two and allowed one hit in five innings. Spencer struck out three, walked two and allowed one hit in two innings.

GAME 2: GSW 3, LANDER 1 

Lander’s only extra-base hit of the game came in the first inning and it drove in the Bearcats only run of the nightcap.

Lander (15-17, 3-7 PBC) held the one-run advantage until the fourth. With two outs, Gabby Buck walked for Southwestern, Lyndi Duff singled and Wooten proceeded to clear the bases with her third home run of the season, a shot to left center.

That was all the cushion Lady ‘Canes starter Jessica Martin (4-8) would need as she went the distance, scattered six hits, struck out 10 and walked one.  

Lander’s Spencer (3-9) took the loss, striking out eight, walking two and allowing three earned runs on three hits in four innings.

The Lady Hurricanes (15-28, 3-13) travel to Albany State on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
