Rollins takes two from Lady 'Canes

The Georgia Southwestern softball team lost both games of a Monday afternoon doubleheader (3-0, 13-4) against Rollins College at Lady ‘Canes Field.

Megan Wilkinson finished the day 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and run scored to lead Southwestern at the plate. Gabby Buck was the only GSW hitter to pick up a hit in both games as she went 2-for-6 with a run scored and a RBI in the doubleheader.

GAME 1: ROLLINS 3, GSW 0

GSW starting pitcher Mariko Nomura retired 10 of the first 11 Rollins batters she faced in the afternoon's opening game. However, it was hitters 12, 13 and 14 that decided the contest.

With one out in the fourth inning, Rollins reeled off back-to-back singles and then a base-clearing double to go on top 2-0. That would prove to be all the runs RC pitcher Kirsten Frame would need.

Frame (10-1) through a complete-game shutout, scattering three hits while striking out 13.

Rollins added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Nomura (4-8) pitched into the seventh inning for the Lady Hurricanes, allowed the three runs, struck out two and walked one.

GAME 2: ROLLINS 13, GSW 4 (5 inn.)

After scoring three runs in the first inning, the visiting Tars put the game away in the third with a seven-run frame.

Southwestern surrendered only three hits in the third inning, but the dagger came in the form of a grand slam from game 2 starter Christine Roser.

Rollins scored their final three runs in the top of the fifth before the Lady Hurricanes pushed four runs across in the bottom half of the inning.

Wilkinson was the only GSW batter to have a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, highlighted by the fifth inning RBI triple to right center.

Jessica Martin (2-7) took the loss for GSW after giving up the three runs in the first inning. Tiffany Milstid (2.1 innings), Kimberlee Tolbert (0.1 innings) and Katie Mueller (2.1 innings) also made appearances for Southwestern.

Roser tossed two innings of scoreless ball for Rollins (13-1) before giving way to Samantha Poarch (2-0). Poarch surrendered five hits, struck out two and walked two.

The Lady Hurricanes, who have played eight games in four days, travel to Anderson (S.C.) tomorrow (3/9) for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
