Lady 'Canes turn the tide at West Georgia

CARROLLTON - The Georgia Southwestern softball team earned a split with West Georgia on Friday afternoon, winning Game 2, 3-2, after dropping the opener, 3-1, at University Field.

Leading up to the nightcap, GSW was 0-9 against the Wolves since 2007. The Lady 'Canes had been outscored 58-12 during that span.

With the win, GSW improves to 7-11 this spring, while UWG falls to 9-3.

Gabby Buck led Southwestern at the plate, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-6 with two RBIs.

GAME 1: UWG 3, GSW 1

West Georgia scored a run in the first, but put the game out of reach in the third with a Lindsay Ellenburg two-run home run.

Heather Hodge doubled in the fifth to bring around Jessica Chewning for the Lady 'Canes lone run of the game.

Neither team had a batter with multiple hits.

Christie Shankle (0-4) took the loss for GSW despite holding the Wolves to four hits. She struck out four and walked two.

UWG starter Antionette Diaz (6-1) picked up the complete-game win, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking one.


GAME 2: GSW 3, UWG 2

The Lady Hurricanes scored two runs in the first, led 3-0 after after five innings and held on for the 3-2 win in the nightcap to split the doubleheader.

GSW scored the pair in the first behind singles from Hodge, Buck and Nichole Griffin.

The score remained 2-0 until the fifth when an RBI single from Buck drove in Cayla Smith, who had reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a passed ball and then moved to third on a wild pitch.

GSW starting pitcher Jessica Martin (4-2) picked up her fourth win of the season, scattering seven hits, walking four and striking out four. Martin worked her way out of trouble in the sixth and seventh, holding UWG to a run each inning and stranding two Wolves runners on base each frame.

Nicole Yancey (3-2) took the loss, allowing seven hits. She did not record a walk or strikeout.

Buck finished 3-for-3 in Game 2 with two RBIs to lead GSW.

As in Game 1, West Georgia did not have a batter with multiple hits. 

Southwestern travels to LaGrange on Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
