Solid team effort leads to GSW sweep of Carson-Newman

AMERICUS — Gabby Buck's RBI-single in the ninth inning was the difference as Georgia Southwestern beat Carson-Newman 4-3 to sweep Saturday's doubleheader.

Robyn Butler's two-run double was part of a five-run third inning as GSW (16-20) on the first game 6-3.

Jessica Chewning's RBI-double and a Mason Moreland RBI tied Game 2 at 2-2 in the fourth, and Nichole Griffin tied the game again in the eighth.

Moreland, Griffin, Heather Hodge and Jessica Martin all had two hits in the game; Hodge also doubled.

Casey Burns worked four innings and allowed two runs — one earned — on six hits for a no decision; Katie Maddox picked up the win, pitching the final five innings. She allowed one run — unearned — and two hits, and she struck out three and walked none.

Christie Shankle got the win in Game 1, pitching a complete game, allowing three runs on 10 hits. She walked five and struck out two. Lyndi Duff had two hits and two RBI to lead GSW.

Carson-Newman (21-10-1) was 8-2 against Peach Belt teams this season entering Saturday.
