Lady 'Cane Softball PBC Tournament Preview

AMERICUS - After earning an NCAA-era record 29 victories in the 2013 regular season, the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes are currently preparing for a weekend trip to St. Augustine, ths site of the the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Tournament, as Flagler College is set to host the two-day tournament starting Saturday morning.

This will be GSW's first appearance in the tournament since 2009 when Southwestern triumphed over UNC Pembroke in the opening-round game to claim GSW's first NCAA-era postseason victory in any sport.

This will be the program's first appearance in the tournament since it went to a single elimination format with a narrowed field consisting of the top eight conference teams.

The eighth-seeded Lady 'Canes (29-25) are set to take on top-seeded and second-ranked Armstrong (35-6-1) Saturday at 11 a.m. in the first contest of the tournament at Flagler Field.

This will be the third meeting between the two teams on the year as GSW earned a split with the Pirates in doubleheader action on March 14 at Lady 'Cane Field

In the first meeting, GSW earned the victory in the opening contest of the twinbill. Southwestern used a strong pitching effort from Allison Pastor as the junior threw a complete game, giving up five hits with eight strikeouts. GSW's lone run came off a Nellie Moore home run as the Lady 'Canes earned the slim, 1-0, shutout over the then fourth-ranked Pirates.

Southwestern comes into the postseason riding a two-game winning streak as the Lady 'Canes earned a sweep of Albany State in the final home doubleheader of the regular season.

Armstrong is currently on a four-game winning streak and enter the postseason coming off a sweep of second-seeded Georgia College in the final regular season doubleheader as the Pirates earned the outright regular season Peach Belt Championship.

Individually, junior Hayley Knight (.359) and senior Avery Purser (.329) are the current leaders at the plate for GSW while Pastor (13-4) leads the Lady 'Canes on the mound with a current 3.34 ERA on 155 innings pitched while delivering 115 strikeouts.

As a team, GSW has a current batting average of .287 with a 3.14 ERA. The Lady 'Canes have combined to hit an NCAA-era best 26 home runs. Junior Jordan Miller leads the team with eight homers on the season in addition to a team-best 37 RBIs.
