Denney Saves The Day

AMERICUS, Ga.- Sophomore Allee Denney hit a walk off home run in Game 2 to assist the Georgia Southwestern softball team split with Albany State Monday night at Lady 'Canes Field on Pink Day.

GSW is now 24-28 overall while Albany State moved to 14-28 overall.

GAME 1: GSW 7, ASU 8

Albany State loaded the bases in the first inning with a single, a walk and a wild pitch and scored three runs off a double, a single and a wild pitch. The Lady 'Canes were able to close it down with a double play to end the inning.

Ella Hawkins walked to start the bottom of the first and scored off a single from Hayley Tierce who scored off a single from Haley Goodson. Joshlyn Martin scored GSW's third run to tie the game off a single from Lacy Striblin.

Hawkins scored again in the bottom of the second to take a one-run lead but Albany State pushed four across the plate in the third to take it back.

Graysen Sanders scored in the third off a single from Tierce and GSW tied it up in the fifth when Mikela Barlow extended her GSW season hits and doubles record with one swing plating Hawkins and scoring herself off a single from Goodson.

A lone home run at the top of the sixth gave Albany State a one-run lead and the win after they held off GSW from scoring in the last two innings.

Goodson went 4-4 at the plate and Hawkins was 3-4.

GSW finished with 16 hits, seven runs, seven RBIs and one error.

Kaley Sikes pitched 2.2 innings, had five hits, seven runs, walked five and struck out one.

Savannah Carlisle (L, 3-3) pitched 4.1 innings, had six hits, one run, walked none and struck out one.

GAME 2: GSW 3, ASU 1

Game 2 was scoreless until Martin hit a double to right field to plate Tierce. Albany State tied the game in the sixth with a double to right center.

Martin started the seventh with a single and scored off Denney's home run to win the game.

GSW finished with five hits, three runs, three RBIs and no errors.

Brittany Childs (W, 7-8) pitched seven innings, had four hits, one run, walked three and struck out three.

The Lady 'Canes held a pre-game ceremony where Julie Steele, Cherly Denney and Kay Tierce threw out the first pitch to honor all those affected by cancer.

The Lady 'Canes are away on Saturday to play a conference doubleheader against Armstrong State starting at 1 p.m.
