Home Runs Help Lady Hurricanes Sweep LaGrange

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern softball team recorded their sixth consecutive win after they swept LaGrange College Sunday evening at Lady 'Canes Field.

GSW moved to 7-5 overall while LaGrange is 0-2.

GAME 1: GSW 5, LAGRANGE 4

A walk-off fielder's choice put GSW past LaGrange College in Game 1. LaGrange was leading 2-0 after scoring runs in the first and fourth.

Hayley Tierce and Joshlyn Martin hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth to take a one-run lead; Tierce had a two-run homer and scored Mikela Barlow.

LaGrange had a two-run home run in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead and put a lot of pressure on GSW's offense.

Barlow and Tierce both walked and Martin hit a double to center field to score Barlow and tie the game.

A walk-off fielder's choice from Allee Denney led the Lady 'Canes past LaGrange when Tierce scored.

Barlow went 2-for-3 at the plate and Martin went 2-for-4.

GSW finished with seven hits, five runs, five RBIs and no errors.

Shannon Gibson pitched four innings, faced 19 batters, allowed six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out three.

Brittany Childs (W, 2-2) pitched three innings, faced 13 batters, allowed three hits, two runs, walked one and struck out two.

 

GAME 2: GSW 8, LAGRANGE 5

GSW started Game 2 off strong with four runs in the first. Barlow homered, Tierce scored off a double from Martin, Martin scored off a double from Emily Smith and Denney scored off a single from Hannah McCain.

LaGrange scored two in the second off a double and an error.

Denney hit a home run in the third to give the Lady 'Canes a 5-3 lead.

LaGrange scored two in the fourth off a single dow the left field line to come within one run and tied the game 5-5 in the fifth off a single.

Ella Hawkins scored off a single from Martin and Barlow scored off a sacrifice fly from Denney to take a 7-5 lead in the fifth.

Brittany Davis scored in the sixth and GSW's defense held off LaGrange to take the three-run win.

GSW finished with 15 hits, eight runs, eight RBIs and one error.

Tierce went 3-for-5 at the plate, Denney and McCain 2-for-3 and Martin 2-for-4.

Kaley Sikes pitched four innings, faced 25 batters, gave up 11 hits, five runs, walked three and struck out three.

Brittany Childs (W, 3-2) pitched three innings, faced eight batters, scattered two hits, did not allow a run and struck out one.

The Lady 'Canes are away on Tuesday to play Albany State in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
