Lady Canes Host Americus Girls Softball League Weekend

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University softball program will host the Americus Girls Softball League at Friday's doubleheader vs. Columbus State to be followed by a free softball clinic at Lady Canes Field on Sunday.

"The Americus Girls Softball League is honored to be invited by Coach Levering and her staff to attend this weekend's events," Director of Americus Girls Softball League Angela Fletcher said. "It's so important for the girls to see strong athletes competing at the college level and this will show them what they can achieve with hard work, practice and by challenging themselves."

Sunday's clinic will consist of two age groups, with 7-to-9 year-old girls going from 3-5:00 p.m. and 10-to-13 year-olds following from 5-7:00 p.m. There are currently 44 signed up for the first clinic and 55 Americus Girls Softball League players set to attend the second clinic.

"The GSW softball program is excited to offer this free clinic to the little league softball players in the Americus community," Lady Canes head softball coach Nick Levering said. "We plan to work on all fundamental skills needed to play the game and look forward to helping build a strong youth softball program in the area that will help local high school programs excel."

At Friday's doubleheader with Columbus State the Americus Girls Softball League will join the Lady Cane players on the field for the national anthem and will get a chance to have a meet-and-greet with the team between games. The games at Lady Canes Field will also feature music favorites from past and present animated feature movies.

"The GSW student-athletes are great role models for young girls and can inspire them to achieve not only on the field but in the classroom as well," Fletcher said. "Friday's games will be a great showcase of what rewards for hard work can look like when you earn an opportunity to participate in college athletics and Sunday's clinic will give our young ladies some tools to work towards those goals."

First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from Lady Canes Field on Friday with the second game to follow approximately 30 minutes after conclusion of the first game.
