Lady Canes 1-1 In PBC Opener

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team opened their Peach Belt Conference slate at home against Georgia College where they took one of two games inside Lady Canes field Saturday afternoon.

In game two, Sara Beth King homered over the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth to give the Lady Canes a 3-1 lead. Hayley Tierce sent one over the wall in the bottom of the fifth to add insurance to help the Lady Canes win their first conference game of the season.

Game One: GSW 2, Bobcats 5

Georgia College got on the board in the top of the first when Haley Howell received her first RBI to go up 1-0. In the top of the third, GC pushed two more across the plate for a 3-0 lead. Kayla Kerr put the Lady Canes on the board and received two RBIs when she singled into the right and pushed Chloe Zoeller and Allyson Murdock across the plate to make the score 3-2. 

Jennifer Jernigan took the loss tonight in the circle as she pitched three innings, letting off five hits and four runs. The Bobcats pushed up the score in the top of the fourth and fifth innings when Amber Coy and Rachel Wolverton recieved RBI's that led to the final 5-2 score. GSW had five hits this evening but also made three errors. 

Game two: GSW 4, Bobcats 2

Shannon Gibson received her first win this season on the rubber, pitching 6.2 innings as she only let off eight hits and gave up two runs, striking out three batters in the Lady Canes win. Kerr got the party started when she doubled down the left field line and pushed Zoeller across the plate in the bottom of the first. Kerr made her way around the bases as Lauren Kuerzi was credited with the RBI when she crossed home plate to go up 2-0. 

In the top of the third, the Bobcats were able to get on the board with bases loaded as a Lady Bobcat was advanced on a passed ball but a King home run gave GSW breathing room in the bottom fourth. In the top of the seventh, GC (17-10, 1-1 PBC) tried to make a comeback when Howell popped a sacrifice fly out to left field and pushed her teammate across the plate but the next batter was retired for the GSW win. 

Up Next: GSW (10-10, 1-1 PBC) returns to the mound on Wednesday, March 13 when they travel to Rome, Ga., to take on Shorter University. The first pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 2 p.m.
