Softball Opens Season 2-1 At Flagler Invitational

St. Augustine, Fla. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team opened their season 2-1 at the Flagler Invitational, dropping game three during Day 2. The Lady Hurricanes defeated Ursuline and West Georgia before losing to Valdosta St. during Day 2. 

Katelyn Wood led GSW with their first home run of the season, finishing the tournament going 4-11 with a team-high .364 batting average. She also led the team with four RBIs followed by Lauren Kuerzi, who finished with three RBIs, going 3-9 with one run and one double. Ansley Dean racked up 10 strikes and one win during 5.2 innings of work throughout the tournament. 

Game 1 (GSW 10, Ursuline 3) - Ursuline got on the board first in the top of the first with a two RBI single down the left line that put them up 2-0. In the bottom 2nd, a RBI double by Jacie Johns pushed Chloe Zoeller cross the plate for their first score of the season. After advancing, an UC error pushed Johns across the plate to tie the game at 2-2.

With bases loaded in the bottom second, Zoe Willis, who reached base on a single, scored for the Lady Hurricanes. A RBI single by Kayla Kerr pushed Kimmy Singer across the plate followed by a two RBI double by Katelyn Wood, who plated Johns and Zoeller as GSW led 6-2. The Lady Hurricanes scored in the first five innings with Johns, Wood and Singer all picking up doubles. Ansley Dean (five strikeouts) and Hannah Holloway shared the circle, with Holloway picking up their first win of the season in 5.0 inning pitched. 

Game 2 (GSW 5, West Georgia 4) - Both teams started the game scoreless until the bottom third when Wood hit her first home run of the season. A two RBI home run into the left field put the Lady Hurricanes up 2-0. Two hits later, Lauren Kuerzi singled into right center that plated Willis and Kerr as GSW led 4-0. West Georgia returned the favor, tieing the game in the top fifth with a two RBI home run. In the bottom seventh with two outs, Kuerzi doubled into right field as she stood on second. Haley Griffin then replaced Kuerzi for a pinch run as she advanced on a passed ball and stood on third base. Morgan Mullin gave GSW (2-0) their second win of the day when she singled down the right field line and plated Griffin for the game winning score. 

Shannon Gibson and Dean shared the circle with Dean picking up her first win of the season, throwin four strikeouts in just 2.2 innings of work. 

Game 3 (GSW 1, Valdosta St. 7) - It took all seven innings until the scoring started for either teams. Valdosta St. started with a home run into left field to put them up 1-0. The home run started a scoring rally for VSU, who ended the inning up 7-0. Willis started the bottom seventh with a double into right field and advanced when Kuerzi grounded out. A sac RBI by Mullin plated Willis but the game ended afterwards, as Hailey Pinette flied out while GSW picked up their first loss of the tournament. 

Gibson, who pitched 6.0 innings while throwing three strikeouts, picked up the loss for the Lady Hurricanes.
