Willis's Grand Slam Help Push GSW To Split Wins

AMERICUS, Ga. -- With bases loaded in the bottom second during Game 2, Zoe Willis hit her first career grand slam, helping the Georgia Southwestern softball team to a 10-2 game 2 win in five innings against Point University in a midweek doubleheader. During Game 1, Point had a big fifth inning where they scored six runs to take the lead. Willis first home run came in the bottom fifth inning but it wasn't enough to get the lead back as they fell, 6-5.

Lauren Kuerzi finished 6-for-6, with three home runs and a double. She had four runs and three RBIs. Willis finished 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs with six RBIs and four runs. Shannon Gibson had a team-high eight strikeouts.

Game 1: GSW 5, Point 6

GSW (7-2) started scoring in the bottom second. Kuerzi's first at bat ended up being a two RBI home run into left field as GSW took a 2-0 lead. The Lady Hurricanes scored another pair of runs in the bottom fourth with a sacrifice fly by Gibson that plated Willis. With bases loaded, Chloe Zoeller hit a RBI single right up the middle for a 4-0 lead.

Things quickly changed for GSW in the top of the fifth inning, as Point scored six runs off four hits. Willis, who started in the circle, was replaced by Ansley Dean, who finished pitching for the Lady Hurricanes. They combined for seven strikeouts as Dean took her first lost of the season. GSW was able to get into scoring position twice in the bottom sixth and seventh inning but couldn't regain the lead, losing their first home game this season.

Game 2: GSW 10, Point 2 (5 innings)

Point picked up where they left off at in Game 1, as they started Game 2 with a two RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. Fortunately, the Lady Hurricanes had a huge seven-run, five hit bottom second inning that saw them take the lead. Kayla Kerr started the inning with a home run into left field followed by Kuerzi, who hit her second home run of the day. With bases loaded and one out, Zoeller hit a RBI single. Willis then followed up and cleared all the bases with a grand slam right into left center as GSW took a 7-2 lead.

Hailey Pinette hit a home run to start the bottom of the third inning and Kuerzi ended the game in the bottom of the fourth with her third home run of the day. GSW finished with 10 runs and 10 hits in five innings for the split win.
