Late Rally by Blazers Lead to Lady Hurricanes Sweep

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afernoon against No. 7 Valdosta State by scores of 0-4 and 5-6 at Steel's Diamond Softball Field.

GSW scored four runs and took 5-4 lead in the third inning behind Zoe Willis's two RBI single and Katelyn Wood's two RBI home run during Game 2 but the Blazers rallied back, tieing the game in the bottom fourth and sealing the win in the bottom sixth for the doubleheader sweep. 

Game 1: GSW 0, VSU 4

It was a tough Game 1 for the Lady Hurricanes, who struggled offensively. Valdosta St. got on the board in the first inning with a home run right into center field. Lauren Kuerzi tried to get GSW on the board in the top second, getting one of their two hits but GSW was unable to score. A RBI sac fly by the Blazers pushed the score to 2-0 at the bottom second. 

In the bottom fifth, the Blazers doubled the score to 4-0 with a two RBI double into the right field. Shannon Gibson picked up GSW's second hit of the game in the top seventh but was unable to get pass first base as GSW lost, 4-0. Gibson shared the circle with Willis, but received the loss as she gave up four hits and two runs while striking out one throughout 2.0 innings of work. 

Game 2: GSW 5, VSU 6

Game 2 was different for GSW (8-5) who got on the board early. With two outs and Kayla Kerr, who reached base with a single and advanced with an error, on third, an error by a Blazer shortstop plated Kerr for a 1-0 lead. Valdosta St. (16-3) immediately took the lead in the bottom first with a two RBI home run into right center. The Blazers was able to double the score off RBI singles in the bottom second that saw them take a 4-1 lead. 

Kimmy Singer was walked to start off the top third inning for the Lady Hurricanes. Chloe Zoeller picked up the first out when she grounded to third base followed by Kerr, who reached base on an error and pushed Singer to third. Willis then hit a two RBI single right up the middle that plated Singer and Kerr. With Willis on base, Wood hit GSW's only home run of the afternoon as she gave GSW a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately, the Blazers were able to tie the game in the bottom fifth as they won in the bottom sixth inning with a sac RBI. GSW went out in fashion in the top of the seventh as they fell, 6-5.
