Lady Hurricanes Split in PBC Opener

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a pair of games against Georgia College as they opened Peach Belt Conference play at home Tuesday afternoon.

Katelyn Wood finished the day with one home run and a double, going 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Jacie Johns finished 3-for-7 with four RBIs and one run.

Game 1: GSW 9, GC 1 (5 innings)

The Lady Hurricanes started scoring in the bottom second in what would be a quick game for them. With one out, Hailey Pinette singled up the middle but advanced to third after a wild pitch. GC's first error of the day came as Kimmy Singer reached first but advanced to third while Pinette scored. A RBI single by Johns then plated Singer for a 2-0 score. After a Kayla Kerr single, Zoe Willis hit a two RBI single as GSW (10-6, 1-1 PBC) led GC 4-0.

GSW kept the same momentum going into the bottom third, picking up three runs. Singer was plated with another Bobcat error followed by Johns, who hit a two RBI single to plate Shannon Gibson, who reached base on a single, and Singer as GSW led 7-0. Two more errors in the bottom fourth gave GSW a 9-0 lead. With two outs in the top fifth, the Bobcats were able to get on the board but it wasn't much as Zoe Willis struck out the last batter of the game for her seventh strikeout of the day, finishing the game with the win.

Game 2: GSW 4, GC 6 (8 innings)

GSW got on the board first during game two. With two outs and Kerr on base after getting walked, Willis hit a bomb into right center that gave GSW a 2-0 lead. GC (5-17, 1-7 PBC) picked up back-to-back RBI singles in the top third to tie the game 2-2. A Bobcat RBI double in the top fifth gave GC their first lead of the day but GSW tied it in the bottom fifth after scoring on an error.

In the bottom sixth, Wood answered GC's lead with a home run to open the inning to tie the game at 4-4. In the seventh inning, neither team could get pass the second base which pushed the game into extra innings. GC took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, scoring from a GSW error then hitting their first home run of the day. With two outs, Pinette tried to rally back with a single but Gibson was grounded out as the Bobcats won their first PBC game of the season, 6-4.
