GSW Sweeps USC Aiken on Alumni Weekend

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team swept USC Aiken during Alumni Weekend Saturday evening. GSW won by scores of 4-3 and 11-5 on Lady Hurricanes Field for their first Peach Belt Conference sweep of the year. 

During Game 1 in the bottom seventh as the score was tied 3-3, Zoe Willis hit a RBI single up the middle that plated Jacie Johns for the go ahead win. In Game 2, down by one run, the Lady Hurricanes rallied with an eight-run sixth inning for the sweep. Ansley Duffey and Chloe Zoeller both hit triples within the inning. 

Game 1: GSW 4, USCA 3

After getting on base by walking, a GSW error plated Aiken for a score in the opening inning. In the bottom second, GSW returned the favor. With two outs and bases loaded, an Aiken error plated two Lady Hurricanes to make the score 2-1. In the third inning with two outs, Kimmy Singer picked up an RBI when she singled into the left field to plate Duffey for the 3-1 lead. 

USCA hit a two RBI triple in the fifth inning that led to them tieing the score at 3-3. Both teams went three up and three down in the sixth inning that led to an important seventh inning for both squads. Shannon Gibson controlled the circle, getting another three outs while striking out one in the top of the seventh. Jacie Johns was walked to start off the bottom seventh followed by Kerr, who singled into left field to push Johns into scoring position. Willis then singled right up the middle as Johns advanced home for the go ahead win. Gibson put in 2.0 innings of work while throwing four strikeouts to pick up the win.

Game 2: GSW 11, USCA 5

USCA opened Game 2 with a fast 4-0 lead by scoring on a two RBI double followed by wild pitches by Gibson to open the game. Hannah Holloway took control of the circle in the top second inning for the Lady Hurricanes. GSW (12-6, 3-1 PBC) was able to get on the board in the bottom third with a SAC RBI by Kayla Kerr to plate Singer, 4-1. The Lady Hurricanes scored two more in the bottom fifth after a Pacer error followed by a perfect RBI bunt by Wood, 4-3. In the top fifth, a RBI double by USCA (1-9, 1-7 PBC) pushed the score to 5-3. 

GSW controlled and won the game in the bottom sixth. With one out and bases loaded, a SAC RBI by Kerr plated Zoeller as that started the rally. Willis reloaded the bases again as she was walked while GSW had two outs. Katelyn Wood started with a RBI single followed by Lauren Kuerzi, who picked up an RBI as she was walked to take the first lead of the game, 6-5. Duffey followed up with a three RBI triple to extend the lead. The Pacers changed pitchers but that didn't stop the momentum of GSW as Gibson hit a RBI double while Zoeller's RBI triple finished the scoring. Holloway finished with her sixth strikeout in the top seventh to pick up the win.
