GSW Big Game Two Helps Split Wins at Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Zoe Willis hit a three-run home run during game two that helped the Georgia Southwestern softball team split wins under the lights in a Friday night doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference opponent Lander University. The Lady Hurricanes dropped game one 2-0 but rebounded for a huge 12-7 win in game 2. 

In the top sixth of game two, Willis sent a bomb into the right center for her sixth home run of the season, pushing GSW to the split win. GSW put up 13 hits in game two as Kimmy Singer led with three hits while four other Lady Hurricanes finished with two. 

Game 1: GSW 0, Lander 2

Shannon Gibson started in the circle and stood strong for the first three innings as both teams couldn't get cross home plate. Everything changed in the bottom fourth as Lander got on the board first. With one out, the Bearcats doubled into left field for their first score of the game. Their next batter hit a RBI single into the right field for a 2-0 lead. All of the Bearcats three hits came in the bottom fourth inning, blanking the Lady Hurricanes for the Game one win. 

Game 2: GSW 12, Lander 7

A home run by Lander in the opening inning pushed them to an early 1-0 lead to start the game. GSW (15-17, 6-10 PBC) got on the board for the first time in the top third as Kimmy Singer picked up an RBI when she singled to second base to tie the score. With two outs and two on base, Willis picked up a two RBIs when she singled into centerfield to push the score to 3-1. In the top fifth, GSW scored three runs of three hits to take a 6-1 lead. 

Jacie Johns started off the top sixth with a single followed by Singer, who reached base with off a Bearcat single. With two outs, Willis sent a bomb into right center to help extend the lead. Ansley Duffey was walked which led to Katelyn Wood coming at-bat, who sent another bomb into the right field as she picked up two RBIs on the way. 

A tough bottom sixth by GSW led to a great bottom sixth for Lander (15-17, 2-12 PBC), who scored six runs off five hits and one GSW error as they climbed back and trailed 11-7. Gibson shut things down and was able to get her fifth win of the season while striking our four during 3.2 innings of work in game two for the 12-7 win.  

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes will stay on the road for a short trip to take on PBC foe Columbus St. on Friday, April 30.
