MONTEAVALLO, Ala.- After a historic 7-1 start to their 2011-12 season, the Georgia Southwestern Lady 'Canes were looking to pick up the victory in their first Peach Belt Conference game. The Blue & Gold didn't just win, but they won convincingly 101-57. It marked the first time the GSW ladies had ever won in Montevallo (4-3, 0-1 PBC).
Adrian Randall paced the Hurricanes with game highs of 25 points and 17 rebounds. She scored her 25 points on a red-hot shooting performance of 10-13 from the field. Jessica Bivins was GSW's other 20-point scorer with 22 points as she shot four of seven from beyond the arc. Georgia Southwestern had nine different players score, which included five in double figures.
Rebounding, shooting and sharing the ball were the calling cards for GSW. The Lady 'Canes outrebounded the Lady Falcons by 28, which lead to 33 second chance points. The Hurricanes buried twelve of their 20 three-point shots (60.0%) and had 24 assists to just 13 turnovers.
The Lady 'Canes would open the game with suffocating defense as they only gave up six points on 3-12 shooting in the game's first ten minutes. GSW opened with four of seven shooting three-point shooting during that same period of time on the way to a 24-6 lead at the first half's under ten minute media timeout.
They would go into the halftime break with the 47-22 lead. Their first-half defense provided a six-minute scoreless span for Montevallo. Defensively, the Blue & Gold bottled up Montevallo to 8-26 shooting (30.8%), forced eleven turnovers, which was turned into 14 GSW points off turnovers. They also out-rebounded the Lady Falcons by 21 (34-13), which accounted for 20 second chance points in the half.
The first half performance on offense was just as impressive. GSW made a scorching 7-11 (63.6%) shooting from beyond the arc and registered twelve assists on 18 made baskets.
The Hurricanes were lead by junior Adrian Randall's 16 points (6-7 from the field) and seven rebounds. She was supported by Jessica Bivins with twelve points and Lashe Kirkland with nine points.
Georgia Southwestern would pick up where they left off in the second half. The Hurricanes opened up the second half with a 22-12 run to take an even tighter hold of the game.
Coach Britsky and company never trailed during the game, and they led Montevallo by at least ten points for over 33 of the game's 40 minutes. It was also the first time the Lady 'Canes had ever won at Montevallo, and their all-time record against the Lady Falcons is now 3-4.
The victory puts the Georgia Southwestern record at 8-1 (1-0 PBC). The series of road games takes a tough turn for the Lady 'Canes as their next game is against the defending national champion Clayton State Lady Lakers. GSW will play CSU on Wednesday, December 14th at 5:30 pm on the campus of Clayton State University.
