Lady 'Canes Unable To Fight Off Mountain Lions

AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team took on Peach Belt opponent Young Harris College in their second meeting of the 2013-14 season. Junior Shatoria Hudson led GSW with 12 points and seven rebounds, but unable to snatch the win, GSW lost 41-47.

Young Harris College improves to 13-4, 8-2 PBC. GSW moves on to 8-11, 5-7 PBC record. The first meeting between GSW and YHC this year was on Jan 4th, YHC won 71-55. Young Harris continues to lead in the All-Time Series NCAA-era 4-2.

It was a low scoring game between the two teams. The last time the Lady 'Canes scored less than 50 points was February 23, 2013 and the last time they held a team to less than 50 points was November 12, 2013 against Truett-McConnell.

Young Harris Mountain Lions pulled away to an early seven point lead in the first half. At 5:35, Jasmine McSwaine and Hudson made their jumpers and Sierra Barrino-Kennedy made two free throws to bring the game back to a one point game, 18-17. The next basket by Tiara Thompson put the Lady 'Canes in the lead for the first time during the game at 2:29. YHC tried to pull away again, but after a free throw by Danisha Green and a final second three-pointer from McSwain. GSW trailed YHC by one going into the half, 24-23.

Coming out of Half time, GSW came into an early team foul trouble. Early fouls came from Hudson, Lockett, Barrino-Kennedy(2), and Shaniece Sheffield. Sheffield started a back and forth two-point run with almost even scoring on the home side from the 12:07-5:35 mark, featuring layups by Jones, Hudson, and Lockett. At 1:04, Lockett made the last successful layup for GSW. The Lady 'Canes then began their fouling game in hopes to secure a lead. Unfortunately, YHC won the game 47-41.

YHC's bench contributed 17 points compared to GSW's 8.Young Harris took advantage of the turnovers and scored 22 points off the turnovers committed by GSW. GSW had three more turnovers during the game.

The Lady Hurricanes begin a two game on the road stretch beginning with PBC opponent Columbus State on February 5th at 5:30 p.m.
