Lady 'Canes Move Past The Mocs In Final Minutes

AMERICUS, Ga.- Danisha Green lead the Georgia Southwestern University women's basketball team with 22 points to a close call win over Florida Southern Saturday afternoon inside the Storm Dome.

GSW had two other players besides Green score doube digits today. Green went 7-9 with field goals and 7-10 with free shots and picked up 5 rebounds. Tiara Thompson scored 10 points for GSW and Ja'Quasha Sesler had 10 points including 2 3-pointers. Shanedra Lockett had 10 rebounds for the Lady 'Canes and 9 points.

The Lady Canes had a good start and took the lead with a lay-up by Thompson thirty seconds in and then a quick steal from Green to Sesler to make a 3-pointer. Thompson also made a 3-pointer to give GSW a 8-0 lead.

The Mocs were able to put in 2 jump shots and a layup to make the score 9-6. For most of first half Florida Southern only trailed by 2 or 3 points until the ten minute mark when Green put in a layup and made a free throw. Armstrong and Hudson both put in a layup followed by Armstrong with a 3-pointer to make the score 15-25 at the 9:53 mark. GSW tried to keep the 10 point lead and was up by12 points with 2:34 left in the first when Florida Southern's Christian Strawbridge made a layup and two free throws to bring the score to 41-33. The Mocs made two more jump shots and a free throw to close the gap to 41-38 going into the second.

Florida Southern pushed the momentum in the second half and made two jump shots and two free throws to take the lead by one. The Mocs lead the second half until the 3:50 mark. GSW's Sesler made two free throws to take the lead back by one point making the score 70-69. Green made a layup with 3:21 left and the Mocs made a jump shot and a layup to take the lead with 2:36 remaining. Green tied it up again with a free throw and and Sesler made another 3-pointer to take the lead for the third time. Hudson made a jump shot to secure the lead by 3 points and Locket secured the win with a free throw.

The Lady 'Canes broke ground with their first win against the Mocs, the all-time record between GSW and Florida Southern is now 1-3.

GSW lead in assists with 13-6 and points in the paint with 30-20. The Lady 'Canes also made 22 points off turnovers.

The GSW Lady Hurricanes are on the road this upcoming weekend for the Peach Belt/SIAC Challenge at Albany State. They will play Albany Saturday Nov. 29 at 4:00PM and Fort Valley Sunday Nov. 30 at 4:00PM.
