Lockett Helps Lady 'Canes Lock Down 5th Straight Win

AMERICUS, Ga.- Shanedra Lockett helped lead the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team to their fifth straight win of the season against Middle Georgia State College, making their overall record 5-0.

Lockett lead GSW with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Junior Ja'Quasha Sesler put up 15 points and Yvonna Dunkley had 14 points including two 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 with her free throws. Senior Shatoria Hudson put up 12 points with 8 rebounds and was 5-for-5 with field goals.

Hudson gave an early lead 3-0 to GSW with a free throw due to a technical on Middle Georgia State and a lay up shortly after. The knights were able to tie it with a 3-pointer but Hudson made another free throw to give GSW a one point advantage. Middle Georgia made 2 jump shots to take back the lead. Danisha Green put in two free throws to try and get GSW to lead but the knights came back with two free throws and a 3-pointer to take a six-point lead at the 16:34 mark.

The Lady 'Canes quickly turned it back around with Hudson making a jump shot, Green with a layup, Kenyona Armstrong with a 3-pointer, and Dunkley with a layup to take the lead once again. The rest of the first held a close score with both teams taking the lead with almost every basket. Dunkley put in 2 free throws at the end of the first making the score 43-39 and giving GSW a 4 point lead going into the 2nd half.

The Lady 'Canes approached the second half with a second wind and stretched their 4 point lead into a win. Tiara Thompson made a lay up and Lockett put in a 3-pointer to give GSW a 6 point lead. Green made two more free throws followed by Thompson with a 3-pointer and Hudson with 2 lay ups to give them a 12 point cushion. Dunkley, Thompson and Sierra Barrino-Kennedy all made layups to give GSW a 16 point margin with a score of 63-47 at the 13:55 mark.

The Lady 'Canes kept up the baskets and took their fifth straight win 95-78. Their largest lead was 25 points ahead for almost 6 minutes in the second half. They had 19 points off turnovers, 20 assists and had 50 points in the paint. 

The Lady 'Canes are on the road this weekend December 5 at Johnson C. Smith University and December 6 at Belmont Abbey looking for wins No. 6 and No. 7.
