Turnovers Too Much To Overcome At Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team was defeated by Lander University, 79-67, in a Peach Belt Conference matchup Saturday afternoon in Horne Arena.

It's the Lady Hurricanes first conference loss of season as they fall to 7-2 overall, 1-1 in the PBC while Lander improves to 10-2, 3-0 in conference play. The Lady Bearcats control the NCAA-era series record with GSW, 8-1.

Lander utilized a 15-3 run in the middle of the first half to create separation from GSW and led 25-13 with 7:33 remaining until halftime.

GSW answered with seven unanswered points capped by a 3-pointer from Yvonna Dunkley to pull within five of the Lady Bearcats at the 5:59 mark, but that would turn out to be as close as Southwestern could get the rest of the afternoon. Lander led 35-27 at halftime and eventually opened a 27-point margin, 65-38, with 10:16 left in the game.

The Lady Hurricanes finished with a higher shooting percentage (47.5%) than Lander (41.2%) and won the rebounding battle, 41-36, but turned the ball over 15 more times (41-26) and committed eight more fouls (24-16) which put the Bearcats on the free throw line for 26 attempts. The 41 turnovers are the most the Lady Hurricanes have made since Feb. 2, 2011, when they turned the ball over 42 times at Clayton State.

Shanedra Lockett scored a game-high 16 points to pace the Lady Hurricanes. Ja'Quasha Sesler made 6 of 8 shots, had five steals, dished three assists and finished with 13 points. Emili Russ pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

Bre Crum made 6 of 7 shots and scored 15 points to lead Lander. Ty'Hesha Reynolds chipped in 14 points.

Southwestern returns home after the holidays to host Montevallo on Jan. 3 at 1:30 p.m.
