Lady 'Canes Fly Past Falcons For The Win, 80-74

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Senior Tiara Thompson lead the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team (10-9, 4-8 PBC) with 27 points in their 80-74 win Wednesday night against the University of Montevallo Falcons (1-18, 0-12 PBC) in Trustmark Arena.

The Lady 'Canes made the first four baskets of the game. Thompson put in two lay ups and Yvonna Dunkley made two free throws to take a 6-0 lead. Montevallo put in two layups to fall behind by only two but Dunkley made a 3-pointer to take a five point lead. Montevallo stepped up their momentum and put in the next five baskets including two 3-pointers and three jump shots to take the lead 16-9. Danisha Green sank a jump shot for GSW and Montevallo responded with one of their own keeping the lead by seven. Shanedra Lockett put in a 3-pointer for GSW to close the gap a bit but Montevallo made a lay up. Thompson and Ja'Quasha Sesler both made lay ups, followed by one from Montevallo and then Green put one in for GSW to only be behind by two. The Falcons made a lay up to take a four point lead but Thompson closed it by one point with a lay up and a free throw. Montevallo took their seven point lead back with two lay up, a jump shot and two free throws. Kenyona Armstrong and Shatoria Hudson tried to make up the gap with baskets but the Falcons put in a 3-pointer and a lay up for a ten point lead with 2:12 left in the first half. Tanyette Hill made a free throw to put GSW behind by only one and Lockett put in a lay up but Montevallo put in their own lay up to take the lead going into the second 39-30.

GSW dug deep in the second half and really turned things around. Montevallo made the first basket but Alejandra Anderson put in a 3-pointer followed by Green and Thompson with lay ups to put GSW behind by only four. Montevallo put in the next two baskets and the Lady 'Canes responded with Green putting in two jump shots, Thompson with a lay up and Dunkley with. a 3-pointer to take the lead by one with 12:42 left on the clock.

Thompson made two free throws to take a three point lead and after Montevallo made a basket Thompson put in a lay up followed my the Falcons with another basket. Sesler put in a lay up and Montevallo made a free throw and Green put in two free throws to give GSW a four point lead. After Montevallo made a free throw Anderson put in a lay up, free throw and a jump shot to give the Lady 'Canes an eight point lead. Anderson provided a huge spark in the Lady 'Canes decisive run as she came off the bench to score eight points in a 10-minute span, added two assists and collected a pair of steals.

Montevallo came back with four free shots and a basket to only be behind by two. Hudson put up some points for GSW with a jump shot, a lay up and two free throws to take the lead 65-57. Sesler put in two free throws to take a ten point lead with 2:42 left in the game.

Montevallo put in a lay up and four free throws to tighten the gap by four but Thompson, Green and Dunkley all put in baskets to put the lead back at nine with one minute left. In the last minute Montevallo put in four free throws, a lay up, jump shot and 3-pointer but it wasn't enough to beat GSW with their eight made free throws all by Thompson.

The Lady 'Canes came out with a 80-74 victory. Thompson put in 11 of 11 free throws and 8 of 15 baskets. GSW out rebounded Montevallo 38-32.

The Lady 'Canes are home Saturday to host Clayton State at 1:30 p.m. for homecoming.
