Lady 'Canes Win Season Opener 67-54

COLUMBUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team opened their season with a 67-54 win against Albany State Friday night at the Peach Belt/ SIAC Challenge at Lumpkin Center.

The first half was close with the first quarter ending 12-7 and GSW leading by only two points going into half time.

The Lady 'Canes found more of a momentum in the second half. Va'Queshia Hall made a jump shot to put GSW up by four and Ja'Quasha Sesler followed with  lay up to give them a six point lead.

Albany State came back to tie it up with six minutes left in the third but Aleah Holden took the lead back for GSW after making a layup, two free throws and another layup all consecutively.

Albany made three free throws to put them within three points of GSW. The Lady 'Canes heated up to make three layups, five free throws and a 3-pointer from Whitney Young to end the third up by 13 points. 

The Lady 'Canes held the lead in the fourth quarter to win 67-54.

Jasmine McSwain put up 16 points for GSW and was 10-10 from the free throw line and had three rebounds. 

Yvonna Dunkley had nine points and three rebounds. Hall had nine points and nine rebounds. Holden was 100% in free throws and field goals and recorded eight points and three rebounds. Emili Russ had six points and nine rebounds.

The Lady 'Canes play their second Peach Belt/ SIAC Challenge game against Fort Valley State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
