Lady 'Canes Claim First Peach Belt Win Against Young Harris 59-53

AMERICUS, Ga.-  The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team won their first Peach Belt Conference game against Young Harris College in the Storm Dome Saturday afternoon.

GSW increased their record to 7-6 overall and 1-5 in the PBC while YHC fell to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the PBC.

Yvonna Dunkley started the game with a 3-pointer followed by Va'Queshia Hall and Aleah Holden both with layups to lead 7-0 three minutes into the first quarter. Young Harris put in a layup and  a 3-pointer to only fall behind by two.

With 18 seconds left Young Harris was leading by one and Kenyona Armstrong made a free throw to tie it 12-12 after the first quarter.

The second quarter went scoreless until the 6:21 mark when McSwain put in a 3-pointer to take the lead for GSW. YHC put up a basket to close the gap by one but the Lady 'Canes took control and put in three layups by Emili Russ, Whitney Young and Russ again and McSwain followed it up with another 3-pointer to lead by 10 with 1:51 left in the second.

Young Harris made one more basket in the second to give GSW a 24-16 lead heading into halftime.

The Mountain Lions came into the second half more prepared and put up 18 points in the third quarter compared to their four points in the second quarter. GSW had 19 points and led 43-34 going into the final quarter.

The Mountain Lions kept up their momentum and started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and a layup. GSW countered with a layup from Sesler and a 3-pointer from McSwain.

YHC put in two more baskets to fall behind by five. McSwain made a free throw to lead by six. With 1:14 remaining the Mountain Lions made a 3-pointer and Whitton followed with a layup for GSW.

GSW fouled and YHC made a free throw, then fouled and Armstrong made a free throw.

YHC fouled two more times in the last 19 seconds and Dunkley made one free throw followed by Sesler with two mae free throws to lead by eight with 12 seconds left. YHC made a jump shot in the remaining seconds to give GSW a 59-53 win.

McSwain led the Lady 'Canes with 15 points. Holden led GSW in rebounds with 11.

Dunkley had 10 points and eight rebounds and Sesler had 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.

GSW outrebounded YHC 49-32 and had more bench points, 29-11.

The Lady 'Canes are on the road Tuesday to play Flagler College at 12:30 p.m.
