Holden Gets First Double Double As A Lady 'Cane In USC Aiken Loss

AMERICUS, Ga.- The fouls were too much at the end of the fourth quarter to keep the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team in reach of the lead Saturday night in the Storm Dome against USC Aiken.

GSW falls to 7-8 overall and 1-7 in the Peach Belt Conference while USC Aiken goes to 8-9 overall and 3-5 in the PBC.

The Lady Canes fell behind 10-5 with 4:42 left in the first quarter and tied it up with a layup from Va'Queshia Hall followed by a free throw from Whitney Young and a layup from Yvonna Dunkley.

Both sides played a tough game and ended the first quarter tied 17-17.

The Lady 'Canes took a five point lead at the 5:36 mark in the second quarter but the Pacers passed them with two 3-pointers to lead by one.

Aleah Holden took the lead back with a layup followed by Khayla Owens with another layup and Dunkley put in a third layup to go into halftime up 32-27.

GSW was leading by eight points with 2:43 left in the third quarter when the Pacers went on a scoring streak putting in two layups, a jump shot and a free throw to fall by one point.

With four seconds left Ja'Quasha Sesler put in a layup to give GSW a two point lead heading into the final quarter.

The Pacers tied the game 44-44 with 6:46 remaining and took the lead with two free throws and a 3-pointer.

Chanice Whitton put in two free throws to close the gap by three but the Pacers put in their own free throw to open the lead back to four.

Young closed the gap to one point after she drained a 3-pointer and Whitton took the lead back with two free throws.

USC Aiken stole the lead again with a 3-pointer and a free throw and led 54-51 with 3:32 to go.

Hall put in a layup to fall behind by one but the Pacers put in another 3-pointer to keep a four point advantage.

Dunkley put in a layup and free throw to cut the lead to one and the Pacers drained another 3-pointer and Dunkley countered with a 3-pointer of her own with 1:18 left in the game.

The Lady 'Canes were within one point of the Pacers but couldn't stop fouling and consequently gave up six points to the Pacers and took a 66-59 loss.

Dunkley led GSW with 15 points and Holden picked up her first double double as a Lady 'Cane with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

GSW is on the road Monday to play Armstrong at 5:30 p.m.
