Lady Hurricanes Explode With First PBC Win

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- The Lady Hurricanes held the lead throughout the whole game as they took a 59-40 win over Georgia College during Saturday's Peach Belt Conference matchup inside the Centennial Center. Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team picked up their first PBC win of the season, erasing an eight-game losing streak. 

The Lady Hurricanes held GC to their lowest score of the season with 40 points as they forced 18 turnovers, including 12 steals. 

How It Happened: GSW erupted with a 5-0 lead before a deep three by Harper Vick cut the run as the Lady Hurricanes led, 5-3, with 6:35 remaining in the opening half. GC tied the game on the next possession but Dominique Jeffery responded with a three to extend the lead. Newcomer Yasmin Perez added a three to cap a 9-0 run by GSW to push the lead up by 10 points with 2:48 remaining. The Bobcats responded on their own but the Lady Hurricanes still took a 15-10 lead going into the second quarter. 

In the second quarter, GC came within one possession, 17-15, with 8:09 remaining in the second quarter but Tamecia Blue extended the lead with a layup. Afterwards, both teams went on a scoring drought for three minutes as it was a low scoring half as both teams combined for 13 points. Layups by Jeffery and Mariya Trimble capped the half as GSW lead 23-15. 

Both GSW and GC opened the third with back-to-back threes as the Lady Hurricanes continued to lead the game with 7:15 left in the third. GSW then erupted on a 14-4 run as they went up by 12 with 2:41 remining in the third. The Lady Hurricanes kept the double-digit lead, 40-30, going in the final 10 minutes of the game. 

Midway through the the fourth quarter, GSW (5-8, 1-6 PBC) went up by 22 points as they continued to hold a double-digit lead. GC (4-12, 1-7 PBC) continued to fight by the Lady Hurricanes pulled away to win their first conference game of the season. 

Both teams shot 62 times from the field but GSW drained eight more for a 37.1 percent from the fiield while GC stood at 24.2 percent. Both squads also drained six from behind the arc but GSW held a 28.6-27.3 three point percentage. GC held a 44-42 rebound advantage but GSW dominated the paint, scoring 32 points within. 

Who Stood Out: Jeffery and Madison Johnson led with 10 points each, as Jeffery added four rebounds while Johnson added three boards and two assists. Trimble led with eight boards to go her five points as Kayla Smith added four blocks to her stats. 

Kenyatta Storms led GC with two from deep, finishing with eight points and three boards. Dail Adaway and Anaya Cone both led with nine rebounds for the Bobcats.
