Slow Start, Big Finish for Lady Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga. -- In what looked like it would've been a slow, low-scoring game after accounting for three first quarter points, the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team erupted with a huge 57-37 Peach Belt Conference win, outplaying Georgia College inside the Storm Dome.

Both teams accounted for six points to end the first quarter in a low scoring game as they combined 2-for-35 from the floor.

How It Happened: Six minutes into the opening quarter, Jamesha Samuel drained a three to put GSW (4-2, 2-1 PBC) in the lead for the first points of the game. Three minutes later with 3:23 remaining the quarter, GC's (1-1, 1-1 PBC) Cassidy Markle tied the game at 3-3 and it kept for the rest of the quarter.

The Lady Hurricanes opened up the second quarter with a 9-2 run that was cut right before a GC timeout as they led 12-8 with 4:56 remaining. Freshmen A'Aliyah Clay, who picked up her first start tonight, and Daelyn Craig connected on back-to-back three's as GSW took their first double-digit lead, 20-10, with 2:38 left in the half. The Lady Hurricanes controlled the rest of the game with a 27-12 halftime lead.

GSW went up by as much as 19 in the third quarter, 36-17, but GC steadily tried to close the scoring gap. Sparked by two three's, the Bobcats went on a 8-0 scoring run before a three by Samuel ended it with 4:03 remaining in the third. GC highest scoring quarter pushed them to closing the gap to single digits as GSW was up 39-30 to end the third.

GC opened the fourth quarter with five quick points as they trailed, 39-35, with 7:31 remaining as they looked to take their first lead of the night. Luckily, the Lady Hurricanes saw differently. They responded with a 10-0 run as they went up 48-35 before the Bobcats were forced to take a timeout. The Lady Hurricanes controlled the final minutes of the game with a huge 57-37 win.

Both teams finished with nine assists but GC won the 53-49 rebound battle. GSW shot 50 percent from the line and 36.8 percent from the field while GC shot 36.8 and 17.6 percent, respectively. GSW forced 18 turnovers, turning them into 20 points on the opposite end of the court.

Who Stood Out: Lex Chatman led with her fourth double-double this season, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Samuel added 14 points and three steals. Clay finished with 11 points, two assists and two steals while K'Shouri Hodge added 10 rebounds.

Keyonna Wesley led GC with 10 points followed by Harper Vick, who finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Cassidy Markle finished with a team-high 13 rebounds to go with her seven points.
