Lady Canes Complete Historic Season in the NCAA Tournament.

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball season came to an end on Saturday night after the Lady Canes lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Lander University. Despite going down double digits multiple times in the game the Lady Canes battled back each time until the final buzzer. Lander led 61-50 with 7:50 remaining in the fourth quarter on a basket but didn't make another shot from the floor for the rest of the game, a tough GSW defense forced the Bearcats to miss its last nine shots. Makaila Cange hit three of four free throws inside the two-minute mark and a tough Georgia Southwestern effort at the end wasn't enough. The Lady Canes had a chance but a three-point shot at the end hit off the front of the rim and the loss ended a historic season for the Lady Canes. Ava Jones paced Georgia Southwestern with 21 points, Jacquelyn Levay scored 13 points and Kayla Langley added 11 points. Daelyn Craig scored eight points while leading the Hurricanes with 13 rebounds.

The 2021-2022 women's team broke many records for the program and school, including, most wins, the first team to host a conference tournament game, and the first women's team to be selected for the NCAA Tournament. Their final addition to the Georgia Southwestern record books was becoming the first team either men's or women's to win a game in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Canes will graduate two seniors, Yasmin Perez and Alyssa Nieves, but will return a handful of players from this historic season, including three Peach Belt All-Conference selections.

The Lady Canes finish the season 23-7 with six of the seven losses coming to fellow NCAA Tournament teams and five of those losses to programs ranked in the top-10. They will become the first women's basketball team to add a NCAA banner into the rafters of the Storm Dome.
