GSW Upsets #25 Carson-Newman; Haden Gets Win in Debut

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team started their season in upset fashion defeating No. 25 Carson-Newman University, 62-58, Friday night in the Storm Dome at the GSW Classic.

A pair of Lady Hurricanes scored in double digits. Senior Destiny Garrett scored 10 points and scored the important 3-point shot that gave GSW the lead in the final minutes. Newcomer Ndidiamaka Ndukwe also scored 10 points and made 50 percent of her shots from 3-point range. 

The game was a back-and-fourth affair the Eagles led by eight points at the end of the first quarter. GSW outscored the Eagles by seven points in the second quarter, from then it became a game of whoever had the ball last would win. 

Inside the Storm

  • Head Coach Hana Haden led the Lady Hurricanes to a win over a ranked opponent in her GSW debut
  • Garrett and Ndukwe were responsible for nearly one third of GSW's points
  • GSW outrebounded Carson-Newman 47-36
  • GSW made its first 11 free throws and did not miss an attempt from the line until the fourth quarter
  • The Lady Hurricanes made 3 of 6 from beyond the arc in the final period. It was their best quarter of the evening from long range.

Georgia Southwestern (1-0) will stay home to host their second game of the GSW Classic against No. 3 Catawba (1-0) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
