Lady 'Canes Win Home Opener

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team scored two goals against LaGrange College Saturday evening to win their home opener at Hurricane Field.

Neeli Fortson scored the Lady 'Canes first goal of the season from five yards out in the 13th minute of the game to take the lead. Ten minutes later Tori Cutlip from LaGrange scored off a rebound to tie it before going into the second half.

Not even two minutes into the second half senior Kristi Sheridan scored the second goal off a corner kick from Avery Heid. The Lady 'Canes were able to hold off the Panthers for the next 43 minutes to capture their first win since 2013.

Elyse Gowen took the win for the Lady 'Canes making her record 1-0 to start the season. Gowen played all 90:00 minutes and had six shots on goal and made five saves.

GSW finished with 18 shots, 12 of which were on goal. LaGrange had 11 shots, six on goal.

Freshman Ella Hawkins had six of GSW's 18 shots and four were on goal. Transfer Shatyriah Crawford made five shots for the Lady 'Canes, three on goal.

The Ladies are on the road Monday to face West Alabama in a non-conference match at 5:30 p.m.
