'Canes drop rubber game with North Georgia, 7-0

Georgia Southwestern pitchers surrendered five runs over the final three innings, while Hurricane hitters were held to just six hits on the afternoon without a walk as North Georgia claimed a Peach Belt Conference series win with a 7-0 victory on Sunday at Hurricane Field.

Craig Brisson put the visiting Saints on the board with a RBI double in the third inning. Brisson would score later in the frame on a two-out throwing error by GSW, giving NGCSU a 2-0 advantage.

The Saints added some insurance runs in the seventh inning off a two-run home run by Brission to left field. Chad Sage knocked in two more runs in the eighth inning for North Georgia and Brission rounded out the scoring with his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left.

Blake Hobby (4-4) threw the complete game shutout for NGCSU. Hobby, who entered the game with an 8.00 earned run average, struck out nine batters.

Hurricane starter Zach Whitman (2-5) allowed six runs - five earned - in 7.1 innings of work. He struck out seven and walked four. Whitman cruised through the first six innings, surrendering only two hits and one earned run. Jody Sellars pitched the final 1.2 innings. He stuck out two and did not walk a batter.

Brisson, the lone North Georgia batter with multiple hits, finished 4-for-5 from the plate with four RBI and three runs scored while belting the double and pair of home runs.

Chris Lingham and Bud Long finished with two hits apiece for GSW.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Wednesday (4/22) against Thomas University at Hurricane Field. The seven GSW seniors will be honored before first pitch, which is set for 6 p.m., as part of Senior Night festivities.
