MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A seven-run sixth inning by Auburn University at Montgomery lifted the Warhawks past Georgia Southwestern, 14-7, on Wednesday evening at the AUM Baseball field.
GSW falls to 5-9 this spring while AUM, ranked No. 18 in NAIA, improves to 10-8.
The Hurricanes had a multiple-run lead dissappear on two occasions Wednesday.
GSW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Josh Sanders led off the game with a double to right center. Sanders eventually scored on a AUM error. Stephen Eldridge added a RBI and Michel Coffey plated a run with his sacrifice fly.
The lead was short-lived as AUM answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. After a hit batter, a walk and a bunt single, GSW starter Justin Lott retired the next two batters with pop outs to third base, only to have back-to-back singles tie the game.
The score remained locked at 3-3 until the fourth inning when Blane Parker drove in Coffey with a double to left and Sanders scored Corey Benson with a sacrfice fly.
GSW had an opportunity to build on its 5-3 lead in the fifth, but left the bases loaded.
In the sixth, AUM brought 11 batters to the plate, but the brunt of the damage came from a Shane Turner grand slam. The Warhawks scored seven runs in the inning behind six hits and a GSW error.
After AUM added a run in the seventh to make the score 11-5, the Hurricanes posted a two-run eighth inning. Coffey singled to open the frame and Benson followed with a double to left. Both players scored on a one-out single to right by Sanders.
The Warhawks wrapped up the scoring with three runs in their final at bat.
Sanders led all batters with a 4-for-4 performance. He drove in three and scored a run. Parker added two hits and a RBI for the Hurricanes.
Turner and Wes Hughes had three hits apiece for AUM. The Warhawks had six players in the lineup tally multiple hits. Turner collected six RBIs. Hughes and Chad Mansmann scored three runs apiece.
Lott did not factor into the decision after tossing five innings and surrendering five runs on seven hits. Drew Cataldo (0-1) took the loss after following Lott. Dillan Folds and Earl Dupree saw time on the mound as well.
AUM used four pitchers in the game. Starter Patrick Devault pitched four innings, allowed five runs - three earned - on four hits. Spencer Youmans (1-1) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief of Devault.
GSW returns home to host Francis Marion in a weekend Peach Belt Conference series starting with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
