Alexander Becomes Home Run Leader as Canes Blast Claflin

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University baseball team completed a three-game Peach Belt Conference series sweep of Claflin University over the weekend to extend their current winning streak to five games. Overpowering offense paved the way for the Hurricanes as the GSW posted 62 runs over the weekend while the pitching staff held Claflin to four runs over 21 innings, scattered 13 hits, and struck out 36.

Kalvin Alexander belted two home runs over the series. His second blast, which came in Game 2, was his 12th of the season and 22nd of his GSW career which makes him the program's all-time home run leader during the NCAA era. Alexander reached the milestone in only 82 games.  

Nick McCollum opened the weekend with five innings on the hill as the Hurricanes were victorious, 25-2. McCollum (5-1) did not walk a batter and struck out eight. George Davis led the Hurricanes at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance. He knocked a pair of three-run home runs and finished with eight RBIs. Brant Deerman had three hits, including a triple, drove in three and scored four times. Cory Lee had a two-run double in the third inning and a three-run home run in the fourth.

In Game 2, GSW posted nine runs in the first inning and cruised to a shortened 22-2 win. The Hurricanes had six players finish with multiple hits. Trent Justice joined Alexander with a home run in Saturday's nightcap. Starting pitcher Rijnaldo Euson went four scoreless innings, walked two and struck out eight. Jacob McClure finished off the evening on the mound with a scoreless seventh. 

In the finale, GSW scored five runs in the first and led 15-0 after three innings. Jake Blinstrub went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and a pair of RBIs. Deerman added three hits. Matthew Manuel was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Lee had a three-hit performance as well. Starting pitcher Andrew Geiger threw four scoreless innings, walked one and struck out six, before making way for Daniel Barcena and Colby Gordon, who each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Jordan Walden and James Fordham shared the final inning and kept Claflin out of the run column.

The Hurricanes (24-7, 8-4 PBC) are at the University of North Georgia for a three-game Peach Belt series starting on Thursday at 6 p.m.
