COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A final score of 848 marked the lowest 54-hole total score in school history as the Georgia Southwestern golf team carded a round 3 low score of 280 (-4) to win the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational. After ending day one in fifth place, the Hurricanes continued to rise up the leaderboard to win their first tournament of the 2019-20 season.
Vincent Norrman opened his senior year with a remarkable first place win, shooting rounds of 71, 67 and 68 for a seven-under 206 as he ties for most individual wins (3) in GSW history.
Newcomer Chase McLain picked up a top-15 finish as he carded a round 3 score of 71 for a final score of 212 (-1), finishing in 13th place. Simon Estrada finished in 25th place, carding 72 for a score of 216 (+3) while Saksit Jairak finished in 33rd place with a score of 218 (+5). Cole Madison's 69 in round 3 gave him a final total of 221 (+8) as he sits in 51st place. Elias Birkeland, who played as in individual, shot a round 3 of 78 for 228 (+15) final score.
Zach Zediker of Delta State and Jordan Doull of Columbus state finished tied for second place, carding a round of 72 and 69, respectively, for a final card of 207 (-6). Florida Tech's Max O'Hagan, Kevin Johnson of St. Leo, Thomas Gana of Lynn University, Alex Hodge of Carson-Newman and Max Coutsolioutsos of Florida Southern all finished tied for fourth place with a total score of 209 (-4).
No. 4 Florida Southern took home second place with a final score of 848 also but due to the tiebraker rule, GSW won the team playoff on the 1st playoff hole with a birdie by Norrman. No. 1 Lynn University (849) and No. 12 St. Leo (852) finished in third and fourth place while host Columbus State and Lee University finished tied for fifth place with a final score of 853.
The Hurricanes previously won the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational back in 2011, shooting a 856 (+4).
GSW returns to the green Oct. 7-8 when they participate in the GolfRank Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern.
