SEASIDE, Calif. — The 21st-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted its best round of the week and led the field with a 3-under-par 285 in the final round of the Otter Invitational on Tuesday to climb six spots in the standings and finish fourth overall out of 18 teams. The tournament, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay, was played at the par-72, 7,104-yard Bayonet Golf Course and featured eight programs ranked in the top 25 of NCAA Division II according to the latest Golfstat computer rankings. It was GSW's first trip to California.
Chase McLain led the Hurricanes with a 70 in Round 3 as he birdied three of his first 11 holes before closing the event with seven consecutive pars. McLain tied for 18th in the 94-player field with a 219 overall. Payne Sells fired a 1-under in the final round and climbed 21 slots in the standings to 26th, two strokes back of McLain. Nicolas Escobar played his final 36 holes at 1-over, despite posting five birdies in the round, and tied for 36th overall with a score of 222. Jack Tharrington finished with a 7-over-par 223 to tie for 38th and Erik Fogel climbed 19 slots in the standings following his 71 on Tuesday where he matched Escobar with five birdies to finish tied for 48th with a 225.
No. 4 Barry University fired a 1-under 287 in the final round to cruise to an 11-stroke victory. No. 6 Sonoma State made up three strokes on Cal State Monterey Bay to tie for second. Simon Bjorken from the host school won the individual title with an 11-under overall, three strokes ahead of the pack.
The Hurricanes spring season begins in St. Augustine, Fla., on Feb. 13 at the Spring Kickoff hosted by Lincoln Memorial University.
