ALBANY, Ga. -- The fifth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a 278 (-9) on Tuesday to finish in third place out of 15 teams at the 10th Annual Hurricane Invitational presented by Alfa Insurance Nate Gahman Agency. GSW's home event, played at the par-72, 7,024-yard Doublegate Country Club, featured nine programs ranked in the Top 25 according to the latest NCAA Division II Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll. The Hurricanes had three players finish under par and two land inside the Top 15 of the 81-player field.
Nicolas Escobar birdied five holes in the final round and finished with a 5-under for the tournament to tie for 10th place. Escobar opened with a 69 on Monday in Round 1 to set the pace early for the Hurricanes. His 14 birdies over the three rounds was one shy of the tournament lead. Joao Costa and Mateo Quiroga led GSW in the final round with scores of 68. Costa posted an eagle on the 15th in Round 3 and dropped an eagle in the opening round on the 13th. He led the field with two eagles for the tournament and played the par 5s at 9-under. Costa finished a stroke behind Escobar at 4-under overall. Quiroga played a bogey-free round on Tuesday and made the biggest jump of the day on the leaderboard for GSW, climbing 21 spots. He finished 1-under overall. Sam Brown was even for the tournament with a 216. Davis Aaron, Joseph Vinyard and Oscar Hammar followed in order with scores of 220, 221, and 222, respectively.
The second-ranked team in the country, University of North Georgia, won the event with a 29-under par. Jack Vajda from North Georgia won the individual title with a 10-under 206, a stroke ahead of the runner-up.
The Hurricanes close out the fall portion of their schedule at the Copperhead Invitational hosted by the University of West Florida in Palm Harbor, Fla. on Oct. 14.
