EATONTON, Ga. -- The 10th-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a 290 (+10) on Tuesday to finish in ninth place out of 15 teams at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia College & State University at the par-70, 6,730-yard Golf Club at Cuscowilla. The event featured eight programs ranked in the NCAA Division II top 20 according to the latest Scoreboard computer rankings powered by clippd. The Hurricanes had two players finish inside the top 20 of the 75-player field that battled blustery conditions both days.
Joao Costa made the Hurricanes largest jump on the final day, moving up 19 slots on the leaderboard with a 2-under par 68. Costa birdied three holes on the front nine and three holes on the back nine to stay under par for the day. Costa made an eagle on the par-5 14th hole on his way to a second-round 69. Costa wasn't the only Hurricane with an eagle in Round 2. Felipe Gomez eagled the par-5 5th hole. Gomez had the best showing of the tournament for the Hurricanes, finishing tied for 16th overall with a 3-over 213. He averaged 3.91 strokes on the par 4 holes over the three rounds, which ranked fifth overall. Sam Brown averaged 4.67 strokes on the par 5s, which also ranked fifth. Rounding out the scoring for GSW on the individual tournament leaderboard were Nicolas Escobar (41st), Brown (49th) and Mateo Quiroga (68th).
No. 2 in the country, the University of North Georgia, won the event with a 1-over par. TJ Thompson from the University of West Florida won the individual title with a 4-under 206, two strokes ahead of the runner-up. Only five golfers finished under par.
The Hurricanes return to action on Monday for the Arkansas Collegiate hosted by Southern Arkansas University at Mystic Creek Golf Club at Cuscowilla in El Dorado, Ark.
