Gomez Advances to NCAA National Championships; Canes Finish 10th at Regionals

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — The fifth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team finished 10th out of 20 teams with an 8-over-par 872 at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional held over the weekend at the par-72, 6,960-yard Mission Inn Resort - El Campeón course. The top seven teams from this regional advanced and will meet the 13 remaining schools from the other three regional sites at the national championships held May 19-23 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Georgia Southwestern was in the most challenging region, battling 11 other teams ranked in the top 20 in the country, with 16 of the 20 participating teams ranked in the top 35 overall.

GSW senior Felipe Gomez will represent the Hurricanes at the national tournament as he earned an individual invitation by being one of the top two finishers on the leaderboard not representing an advancing team. Gomez shot a 6-under par over the weekend and ranks No. 4 in NCAA DII according to the Scoreboard computer rankings following the tournament.

Gomez played holes 10 through 18 at 5-under in the final round on Saturday. He eagled the 14th hole and added five birdies in Round 3 to climb one spot in the standings and complete the three-round event tied for sixth place out of 105 golfers. Gomez opened the event with an even-par 72 before shooting a pair of 69s to close out the weekend.

Sam Brown jumped seven slots on the leaderboard with his 72 in the final round to finished tied for 39th place with a 3-over 219. Nicolas Escobar and Joao Costa were both three strokes back of Brown at 6-over, tied for 55th. Davis Aaron tied for 75th at 10-over par.

GSW led the field in par-5 scoring at 22-under for the weekend, but the Hurricanes lost ground on the par-4 holes (34-over), ranking 16th, and the par-3 holes (7-over), ranking 10th.

The fourth-ranked team in the country, the University of North Georgia, won the event with a 28-under par. UNG was one of only three teams to finish under par. Wingate University took second place at 4-under. Jack Vajda from North Georgia won the individual title for second consecutive year with a 10-under 206, following a one-hole playoff against Brandon Skidmore from Wingate.

GSW won two events in 2024-25 and reached as high as No. 5 in the country and maintained that position for the final month of the season. The Hurricanes qualified for their sixth-consecutive regional appearance and will have to replace seniors Gomez, Escobar and Aaron who wrapped up their collegiate careers in team competition over the weekend.
