Moore Goes Yard Twice, But UNC Pembroke Sweeps

Pembroke, N.C. – Georgia Southwestern softball team is on the road to UNC Pembroke to take part in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Allison Pastor and Nellie Moore hit homeruns in the games; however, were unable to match the Braves run count in both games.

GAME 1: UNCP 12 – GSW 4

In the first inning out, the Lady 'Canes had some dust to brush off before things would get better for them. The Braves first three runs were achieved after a sacrifice hits and then a throwing error committed by GSW. The Lady 'Canes gave up one more run before the first inning was over with four runs, one hit, two errors, and one Brave was left on base.

The following inning for the Lady 'Canes was almost made up for the first inning. Jordan Miller was walked. Then Lauren Thrasher made it to base on a fielders choice. Pastor was next up, and hit a ball into left field homerun territory. Pastor brought in three runs. This was Pastor's second homerun for the season.The inning ended three runs, four hits, no errors, and Ashley Clifton and Mason Moreland were left on base.

During the bottom of the second inning, the Braves brought in two more runs when Shelby Holland singled down the left line. In the third inning, the Braves brought in two runners on separate occasions after being hit into the right field. Again in the fourth inning, after a pitching change for GSW, the Braves completed four more runs, only two were earned runs.

Before all was said and done, Moore was the second in the batting line up for GSW and hit a homerun into left field. With one run, one hit that was not enough to keep the game going. The first game finished 12-4 in five innings.

Pastor (5-4) took the loss for GSW after pitching three innings and facing 21 batters, she gave up six hits and eight runs, and was able to strike out one. Ashley Cavender made an appearance in the last inning on the mound, after facing eight batters she allowed four runs and hits. UNC Pembroke pitcher Natalie Klemann (7-4) took the win after pitching all five innings and only allowing five hits, and four runs, two of which were homeruns.

 

GAME 2: UNCP 17 – GSW 5

It was more of the same during the second game. At the bottom of the first, the Braves succeeded in two more runs, one of which was accomplished after a double was hit by Shelby Holland. The second inning the Braves had five more runs; three of these runs were brought in after a double was hit by Brea Hartley.

The first batter in the third inning for UNCP, Karlee Wilson, hit a homerun into left center. After a pitching change for GSW, the following two runs for the Braves were brought in after Catlin Steel singled up the middle. Then the next three runs were achieved after fielding errors, all three runs unearned. The next batter for the Braves Whitney Jackson hit a grand slam bringing in four runs, all unearned.  One more pitching change for the Lady 'Canes was made. Pastor made her appearance with one out left in the inning. The third inning finished with ten runs, five hits, two errors, and no one left on base.

The Lady 'Canes weren't done yet, in the fourth inning Rachel McElroy doubled into left center bringing in Keri Tompkins and Moore. Following McElroy, Chelsea Hodges singled into center field allowing McElroy to make the trip back home. The inning finished three runs, three hits, one error and two left on base.

One more time for the Lady 'Canes in the top of the fifth, Moore hit a homerun into center field. This hit also brought in Moreland to score. Moore has a count of six homeruns for the season so far.

The game ended early in the fifth inning again as GSW was unable to bring the score within the eight hit margin required after the fifth inning. UNC Pembroke swept the series play.

Cavender (6-4) took the loss for GSW after pitching in two innings and allowing ten runs and hits after facing 19 batters. Thrasher made a short appearance on the mound, allowing the Braves to get three hits and seven runs. Pastor finished the game for GSW, walking one and striking out two.

UNC Pembroke's Selena Ashley (7-4) took the win after pitching four innings only allowing four hits and three runs. Braves Katy Austin took to the mound in the final inning allowing two hits and runs.
