AIKEN, S.C. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team won both games of their double header on Saturday afternoon to win the three-game series on the road over USC Aiken. The Lady Canes used pitching to lead their way to the Saturday double-header sweep allowing just two runs total in both games. The series win is their third conference series win of the season after sweeping Georgia College last weekend.
The first game was a struggle for the Lady Canes offense except for the fifth inning when they scored all of their five runs in that inning alone. The Pacers were able to get hits and score at key times in the game leading them to the 8-5 victory over GSW. A two-run shot by Lacey Rutledge in the fifth inning brought the game within reach for GSW. Zoe Willis and Isabel Marcotte then helped give the Hurricanes the lead in the fifth after two costly errors by the Pacers put them down one run heading into the bottom of the fifth. They would answer quickly scoring four runs in the bottom half to take the 8-5 win in the opening game.
GSW came in the second game of the series looking for revenge, scoring a run in four of the first five innings while only allowing one run to even the series at one apiece heading into the third game. Kimmy Singer added two key RBI to the cause and Hailey Pinette had a home run in the game to defeat the Pacers 4-1 in the first game on Saturday.
The third and final game and second of the day was much of the same for the Lady Canes, after no scoring by either team in the first three innings, the Lady Canes opened up the game with Morgan Mullin hitting a two-run home run to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Zoe Willis would walk in the only run of the game for the Pacers in the bottom half of the fourth but GSW would answer with two more before Zoe Willis closed out her complete game allowing just four hits over seven innings.
The Lady Canes will host Shorter University on Wednesday for a midweek double-header. They will host No. 12 North Georgia this weekend for a three game Peach Belt Conference series.
